Goal Planning:

What would you say if I asked you “Where do you see yourself in 1-3 years?” and “What’s your plan to get there?” Did you know that most people – about 97% of the population would not be able to answer this question? Isn’t it interesting that many of us have dreams and want to make plans but somehow we missed the class on the how to do this, or maybe we were never taught how to make goals or why they are so important? Consider this, You Determine Where Your Life is Going to Go.

This topic is important and near and dear to my heart. In my previous career, I was “raised up” in a corporate environment that taught me how to goal plan, and now I want to help you. I want to equip you to have the tools to understand why goals are an important part of our lives and what steps we need to take to implement them.

Let’s start with what goals are: Goals are when we take our wishes and desires and create a plan of action to bring those to reality. They then get mapped out to a timeline or a calendar so we can walk through them step by step, measuring our progress and keeping ourselves, with the help of others, accountable to follow through on what we said we want to do. They are not wishy-washy, nor are they simply dreams that we may get to at some point later in life.

Goals take our wishes and desires and create a plan of action or to bring them into reality.

Why are goals important? We all have things we want to accomplish in life, desires of our hearts, and plans that God has shown us that we want to bring to pass. The difference between a wish and a goal is a plan. In order to achieve the goals, we need to have a way to write them down – both the big overall goal and the smaller, mini-goals, or steps to accomplish them. Fun Fact – When I write down my goals and follow-through, that sends a signal to my brain that I have integrity – towards myself – and I can be trusted to do what I said I was going to do.

Accomplishing our goals, signals to our brains that we are trustworthy.


Now for the good stuff, the How:

Start with the big picture and ask yourself the question: (This is called the Planning phase)

  1. “Where do I want to be in 1-3 years?”

The next step is to back into the big goal and ask:

  1. “In order to meet my yearly goals, what do I need to be doing monthly to accomplish my goal?”

Then take those monthly tasks and break them down further and ask:

  1. “What do I need to do weekly to stay on track with my monthly goal?”

Then break those down further and ask the same question for your daily tasks:

  1. “What do I need to do daily to accomplish my weekly goals?”

Lastly, we go and do what we set out to accomplish. (This is called the Execute Phase)

  1. Without action, all our planning will be fruitless.

The last step is to share these goals with an accountability partner and meet regularly like, weekly. I will not set myself up for success if I try to be accountable to myself.

We also create small chunks of tasks for two reasons:

  • It helps me not to be overwhelmed, which is becoming more and more common.
  • It helps my brain to acknowledge the success along the way, so I’ll keep going!

We will run into days where we feel like we’re not getting anything done, those are the days we give ourselves grace and remember the accomplishments we’ve already have. Hint – that fuels our drive to keep going.


Here’s an example:

Say I have a goal to make $72,000 per year, I break that down to $6,000 per month, so I can translate that into taking on 6 new clients per month @ $1,000 per client. Then I ask myself, what does it take to add 6 new clients per month? à Those translate to my weekly and daily goals that I need to focus on.

It’s important to note, that all other tasks that do not help move the goal along daily/weekly/monthly need to be set aside as they are time snatchers! We will not reach our goal if we allow our minds to wander and distractions to dominate our days. It’s also important to note that goal planning does not happen solely in our heads, or in a vacuum by ourselves. Find an accountability partner and make this happen. Be the person that shows the most integrity towards yourself first. You can do this!
